Northcote Town Hall

VIC 3070

First launched as part of The Eighty-Six Festival in 2022 and now firmly established as a standalone event, the Independent Music Exchange returns on 6-7 June at Northcote Town Hall, with thanks to the support of the Victorian Music Development Office and Music Australia.

The Independent Music Exchange creates a social environment for Australia’s diverse independent record labels to connect directly with the fans and followers who keep them inspired and afloat. Spotlighting imprints committed to physical formats in a digital world, the event brings together 60 labels over two days, each setting up shop to offer vinyl, cassettes, merchandise, zines, test pressings, posters, warehouse finds, artist signings and other specialty items. Labels of all sizes are welcome, from homespun hobby projects to globally established stables.

This year, the Exchange introduces an education program comprising panel discussions aimed at encouraging the next generation of label makers, alongside those seeking a deeper understanding of independent culture. It will also continue its broadcasting collaboration with Skylab Radio.

Conceived by independent label owners Michael Kucyk (Efficient Space), Maryos Syawish and Corey Kikos (Butter Sessions), the Exchange is modelled on similar markets abroad, fostering community, collaboration and the sharing of ideas and experience.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Music Australia and the Victorian Music Development Office, an initiative of the Victorian Government delivered by Music Victoria.
